This engaging PowerPoint lesson for higher-attaining KS3 students includes a set of lesson objectives and outcomes and a range of five tasks to help students to understand the following:

  • different types of work
  • how work is measured
  • how we write about work
  • work formulas and how work calculations are completed
  • how simple machines work
  • a range of key terms
  • a useful summary.

The lesson includes fun activities such as miming different types of work and an extension activity to consider whether a rabbit could lift an elephant!

The accompanying printable worksheet includes a set of work done traffic calculation cards, which are RAG-differentiated (red for highest level of challenge; green for lowest).

Print them back to back so the answers are on the other side of the card for self-assessment and/or peer marking.

An example activity from the PowerPoint lesson:

  • With your fingers, press your cheeks together.
  • Lift a book off the desk.
  • Stand up and drag your chair backwards.

Congratulations! You have been doing work!

Using the names of different forms of energy, describe the energy transfers which occurred when you moved the objects and compressed your cheeks.
