Europe, past and present
Main Subject
Grammar: Past tenses
Resource type
Complete lesson

Students brush up their knowledge of EU history and compare and practise the uses of the present perfect and past simple with for/since/in.

They then go on to practise the two tenses in a variety of different contexts, including:

  • complete and incomplete tasks on a to-do list
  • holiday experiences.

The resource uses a 'test, teach, test' approach and ends with a gap fill task to assess students' learning.

Exercise 1

Look carefully at these sentences and decide if they are grammatically correct (C) or not (N).

  1. Spain joined the European Union (EU) in 1987.
  2. Hungary has been a member of the EU since 2004.
  3. Spain is a member of the EU since 1987.
  4. Hungary has joined the EU in 2004.
  5. Turkey hasn't joined the EU yet.
