Living in the shadow of Italy's volcanoes
This free video from Discover the World Education explores the volcanic landforms and eruptive hazards in southern Italy and considers the positive and negative impacts of living in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius and Mount Etna – some of Europe’s most iconic volcanoes.
The film visits locations in the Bay of Naples, Sicily and the Aeolian Islands, interweaving narrative with interviews of local people affected by recent eruptions and of expert guides and scientists who monitor Italy’s active volcanoes.
This resource is suitable for students at key stage 4 or key stage 5 and provides excellent support for the study of tectonic hazards at GCSE and A-level. It also ties in well with ‘The Natural Environment’ for iGCSE and ‘Hazards and Disasters’ for IB.
