Earthquake hits Al Haouz, Morocco

On 8 September 2023, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Al Haouz region in Morocco.

The epicentre of the earthquake was not far from the city of Marrakesh.

The earthquake hit just after 11pm which meant that many people were asleep.

Buildings collapsed and some villages close to the epicentre were destroyed.

Al Haouz is in the Atlas Mountains which made it very difficult to provide aid to some people.

More than 300,000 people have been affected and the death count has risen above 2,900.
