Worksheet

The third in a set of three resources on the topic of the ‘Age of Discovery’, as listed below.

In this worksheet, students read the story of the explorer Sir Francis Drake and the Cimarron named Diego using information adapted from Black Tudors: The Untold Story by Miranda Kaufman, highlighting or colour-coding it by theme. They then annotate the passage to explain what we can learn from it about the Age of Exploration.

The activity can stand alone, but it may be helpful if students have completed the previous two resources (or similar material) to provide them with more context and information.

1. Why was there an ‘Age of Discovery'?

2. The Age of Discovery: key individuals

3. What does the story of Drake and Diego reveal about the ‘Age of Discovery’?

The themes for the colour-coding task:

  • Individuals
  • Competition between powerful countries
  • Important trade locations
  • Growth of slavery
  • Beginnings of globalisation
