Required practicals

Two activities to recap the main apparatus needed in a variety of biology required practicals.

In the first activity, students name the pieces of apparatus pictured.

In the second activity, students match pieces of equipment to examples of how they can be used in biology practicals. This could be done as a printed card sort or as an interactive matching task on tablets or on the whiteboard.

The resource was written for year 11 GCSE AQA biology but may also be suitable for other exam boards. It makes a great starter, plenary or quick revision exercise.

The apparatus included in this resource is as follows:

  • Probe thermometer
  • Stop clock
  • Metre ruler
  • 50 cm quadrat
  • 100 ml measuring cylinder
  • Gas syringe
  • Pipette and Benedict's solution
  • Light microscope
