In this year 7 activity, students learn how the transatlantic trade in enslaved people worked by completing a map and watching an online video clip.
The map shows the triangular trade between Britain, West African and America / the Caribbean in the 18th and 19th centuries. Students label the places and sort a list of cargo into outward journey, middle passage and return voyage. They then write an explanation of how this triangle of trade functioned.
Finally, students watch an online video clip about the role of trade in the British Empire and answer comprehension questions.
The list of cargoes from this resource:
- guns
- enslaved people
- cotton
- coffee
- tobacco
- sugar
- manufactured goods.
