This year 7 lesson about the colonisation of North America begins with an engaging starter in which students identify British place names in English settlements in the Plymouth Colony.

They learn the reasons why some people wanted to leave England in the early 1700s and are introduced to the keywords 'emigrate', 'Puritans' and 'pilgrims'.

They then watch an online video clip about the first English emigrants to North America and sequence the key events based on what they have learnt in the video. Answers to the card-sorting activity are provided as both numbered cards and a chronological text.

Finally, students write an answer to the enquiry question 'Why are many places in America named after places in Britain?'

Two of the cards from the sequencing activity:

Puritans were unhappy in England as James I’s rules meant they couldn’t worship God how they wanted.

On 16th September 1620, the Pilgrims set sail on the Mayflower from Plymouth, Devon, for America.
