This creative resource is ideal for helping shape English lessons and structure interesting and interactive lesson starter activities to engage KS3-5 students.

Helpful in supporting teachers in their lesson planning, some activities are designed to link to the learning from last lesson, others link the previous lesson and plenaries with future learning.

The activities are perfect teaching ideas to help warm up students with their learning and tap into a variety of learning styles, supporting all learners.

This resource can be easily adapted into worksheets for the whole class, or as simple recap activities to spark interest at the start of the lesson.

Ranging from a memory game to activities that can be turned into games such as Catchphrase, hangman or bingo, students will respond to the creativity and fun involved in these ideal teaching resources for lesson starters.

A sample extract from the resource:

Use images.  Show students a selection of images/cartoons and get them to explain which relates to last lesson’s learning and how might the others tie in later?  E.g. an example of a technique currently being studied.

Guess who?  Put students into pairs and hand out a wad of post-it notes to each pair.  They write a word or statement relating to the lesson and put it on their partner’s head.  Their partner then has to guess what or who they are!

Explain statements.  Put students into groups of three and number them one to three.  Put three numbered statements up on to the whiteboard and ask students to explain the corresponding statement to their group.

Catchphrase (sort of).  Have an image displayed on the board (relating to the topic of study) but covered up.  Every time a student answers a question then show a little bit more of the image.  The first person to identify the image, wins!
