This helpful and supportive resource enables students to explore the background of the poem 'Honour Killing' by Imtiaz Dharker and investigate the poem's themes, language, imagery, and message.

Designed for students studying the OCR GCSE English Literature specification, this resource examines the contextual issues surrounding the poem. Students can then apply this knowledge when evaluating the poem and its key aspects.

Students are encouraged to analyse the language, form, structure and tone of the poem, before considering major thematic concerns and how these link to the poet's viewpoint.

This resource could also be used for year 9 students as an introduction into GCSE poetry. It could help them to broaden their understanding of poetry style, content and mood in advance of their GCSE study.

A sample extract from the resource:

In pairs or groups, discuss the following points, then make notes or create a revision card.

  1. Look at the poem as a whole, identify the tone and feeling of each stanza, is there a point in the poem where the tone changes?
  2. Does the mood get more or less intense as the poem develops?
  3. Are there any ‘lighter’ moments in the poem, where the mood lifts slightly?
  4. Which, for you, are the most effective lines and why?
