This detailed and helpful resource supports students in their analysis of the poem ‘Poppies’ by Jane Weir as part of their study of the Edexcel poetry anthology for GCSE English Literature.

The initial questions enable students to explore issues around war, family and relationships between mother and son. The activities also support students in their comparison of modern war and how this impacts families and World War One.

The resource includes an answer sheet and prompts students to compare the poem ‘Poppies’ with other poems in the cluster, such as: ‘The Prelude’, ‘Belfast Confetti’ and ‘The Man He Killed’.

A sample extract from the resource:

  1. Draw a poppy. Write key words and phrases from the poem ‘Poppies’ around the flower to help you remember important quotations.
  2. In a pair or group, create a role play dialogue between the mother and her son, exploring their feelings at the events that have taken place. Try to use relevant words and phrases from the poem in your role play.
  3. Colour code the poem. Pick 4 colours to highlight:
  1. The mother’s feelings.
  2. Similes, metaphors and other important imagery.
  3. The semantic fields of love and the relationship between parents and children.
  4. Words related to fear and growing up.
  1. Create a mind map of all the main ideas of the poem, draw images or use colours to illustrate your points.
