This useful resource is designed to take students through a range of activities that help them build confidence and strengthen their skills in descriptive writing.

Students can then apply these skills to their own piece of creative writing in the ghost story genre, exploring key aspects of language, structure and imagery.

There is also the opportunity for students to create a piece of writing based on an image as inspiration.

A sample extract from the resource:

Use the following structure and ideas to help plan your writing.

1. Starting a little distance away from the door and moving closer.

  • Where are you standing?  Why are you there? Think about what you can see, hear and touch. How do you feel? What thoughts go through your mind?
  • Make sure your opening paragraph uses imaginative vocabulary and a variety of interesting techniques.
  • Work with a writing partner to share your work, then another pair to select the piece of writing you all think works best before it is shared with the class.
