Focusing on the poem 'Homing' by Liz Berry from the new AQA Worlds and Lives anthology, this helpful resource provides a variety of creative and imaginative activities that enable students to explore the poem in detail.

The poet, Trevor Millum, has created this helpful resource for students studying the poetry aspect of the AQA GCSE English Literature specification. The activities support students so they can interrogate and investigate the poem in challenging depth to help them gain confidence and build the appropriate skill set.

Including conceptual ideas, examples and prompts, students explore the poem and how the poet crafts language for effect and impact on the reader. Students are also encouraged to consider how form, tone and structure influence meaning.

A sample extract from the resource:

‘Homing’ is one of the poems in the new Worlds and Lives GCSE anthology selection from AQA. The following resources offer ways of helping students become familiar with the language and issues of the poem, preferably before they read it.

  1. Joined up writing. Selected words and phrases from the poem (displayed in the position they occur in the text) are provided as a framework for students to create their own piece of writing, in whatever form they wish. It might be helpful to show how to do this with a demonstration, using the first 3 or 4 phrases, perhaps including students’ suggestions.
