This helpful poetry analysis word mat can be used with KS3 and KS4 students to develop their confidence when writing about unseen poetry.
With a list of poetic terms for reference and sentence starters to help them write analytically, there's also a handy poetry analysis acronym to help them to unpick a poem, using SWEETIES as a framework:
- Subject
- Who
- Explore the language
- Effects
- Themes
- Images
- Emotions (tone)
- Structure
When you are exploring a poem, try to spot some of these techniques and use some of these handy phrases. Remember to explain and explore how techniques are being used by the poet.
