This fun speaking and listening activity explores five weird and wonderful royal bylaws as a starting point for a class debate on new laws. 

Includes a starter activity to explore whether the royal bylaws are real or fake, and a helpful planning grid to help each group to organise their ideas for the debate. 

 

 

Example activities from the resource: 

Speaking and listening task: new laws debate

  1. In pairs, pretend you are in charge of the country. Come up with three laws that you would put in place if you were the ruler. These can be unusual and imaginative, or address real issues that you care about in society.
  2. As a class or in a group, split into two sides. Listen to all the suggestions for laws in your group and choose your favourite three laws. Each side needs to plan their ideas and arguments in favour of the three laws they have selected, including evidence. Use the planning table below to support your preparation.
