The Sign of Four extract tasks
This classroom worksheet focuses on an extract from Chapter 9 of Arthur Conan Doyle's novel, The Sign of Four.
There are three tasks for students to complete, including a reading comprehension true/false activity, which encourages close engagement with the text through quotation selection. Student then consider the Victorian context of the novel, and analyse the treatment of women, with a role-playing activity, before considering their own ideas about the attitudes of the characters.
Includes answers for self or peer marking in class.
Example student tasks from the resource:
2a. In pairs, improvise a modern-day dialogue between Watson and Mrs Hudson, where Mrs Hudson expresses her concern and Watson tries to explain what the matter might be.
You have 2 minutes to discuss.
2b. Condense your ideas into one brief exchange in which you express Mrs Hudson’s concern and allow Watson to give her a more satisfying, less patronising answer.
