Meet Sherlock Holmes in his first appearance in fiction, with this engaging extract from A Study in Scarlet, the first Holmes novel by Arthur Conan Doyle!

Perfect for year 7 or younger KS3 students to introduce them to more challenging 19th-century unseen fiction, this downloadable classroom worksheet includes 15 comprehension questions (with a glossary) on an extract from the 1887 novel, A Study in Scarlet. 

With detailed answers for self or peer marking in class, the questions are designed to develop students' close reading skills (skimming, scanning, summarising, inference etc.), and their confidence with challenging new words and texts.  

Example comprehension questions from the worksheet: 

  1. In paragraph 1, list four ways that the writer shows that this person is incredibly happy and excited about what he was found.
