A Christmas Carol

This useful resource is ideal for supporting students in their understanding of language use and its effects in A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Suitable for students studying GCSE English Literature, the activities help students to interrogate specific examples of tier 2 and 3 vocabulary, explore implied meanings and how these link to the novella's key themes.

This resource is also helpful for study, revision or cover lessons as students can get on with the activities and feedback at touch points throughout the lesson. Additionally, it is flexible enough to be used as a homework activity.

Once students are comfortable with their knowledge and understanding of tier 2 and 3 vocabulary in A Christmas Carol, this can then build confidence and help them develop a stronger approach to analysis and evaluation of the novella, its characters, plot and main themes.

A sample extract from the resource:

1. Use five of the words from the list to write five sentences as a summary of the novella.

2. Create a character profile of Scrooge using three of the words from the list.

3. Explain how the novella is an allegory for caring about other people in society, using two of the words from the list.
