An extract from the article:

What is the Fairtrade mark?

Fairtrade is a system and movement that was set up to help ensure workers’ rights, safe working conditions and fairer pay. Fairtrade was designed to combat the injustices of global trade because many farmers around the world were being paid a low, unfair price for their goods, whilst high profits were being made by the producers and sellers of the end products.

Many products that you can buy in supermarkets and health food shops have the Fairtrade mark, including bananas, tea, coffee and sugar.

The Fairtrade Foundation was established in 1992 by charities including Christian Aid, Oxfam and the National Federation of Women’s Institutes. The Fairtrade Foundation is itself a registered charity.
