An early KS3 worksheet resource to introduce and practise finding the area of compound shapes made from rectangles.
The activity has 2 exercises along with worked examples:
Exercise 1: students find the area of 2 separate rectangles. These are then put together to form a compound shape and the areas are added together.
Exercise 2: students need to first split their L-shape into rectangles before calculating areas.
This resource is best used once students have mastered finding the area of a rectangle.

(the worked example could be better I covered it up to do my own modelling that the students then could copy exactly for the following questions.

Resource used for a numeracy class in higher education setting as a recap. The class are doing construction and needed to be able to measure the room for a new carpet. It went well.
