This is the second part of a two-part KS4 French resource on film genres. Download part 1 of this resource.

Part 2 focuses on more complex opinions, including justifications and comparisons. It also introduces French vocabulary for a few new kinds of film: les films psychologiques / les films qui font rire / les films qui font pleurer / les films inspirés d’une histoire vraie / les blockbusters / les road-movies.

It begins with a sentence builder to help students translate sentences about various genres of films from English to French and reminds students about feminine and plural agreement. Students then compare different types of films, again using model sentences as a scaffold. In tasks 4 and 5, they translate a whole paragraph from English to French and another from French to English, using a range of tenses. Finally, they have the opportunity to express their own opinions about film genres and cinema in speaking and/or in writing through a series of guided discussion questions.

An extract from one of the translation passages:

Mon film préféré est Ratatouille – c’est génial! Par contre, je déteste les films d’horreur parce qu’ils sont trop effrayants.

Hier, j’ai regardé Cendrillon avec des copines. C’était un film fantastique romantique avec mon actrice favorite, Lily James. Ça m’a beaucoup plu. C’était l’adaptation en live-action d’un dessin animé classique et l’histoire était très fidèle au film original.

Aujourd’hui, je vais regarder Les Gardiens de la Galaxie avec mon frère. Il adore l’univers Marvel. Il dit que les films sont passionnants et que les effets spéciaux sont formidables.
