Virelangues: 12 French tongue-twisters
Last updated: 15/11/2023
A set of 12 illustrated tongue-twisters – some traditional, some original creations – to practise French pronunciation. Each tongue-twister has an embedded audio recording as a model.
The tongue-twisters make great starters and can be linked to specific topics (identified in the teaching notes). Alternatively, students could record them at home, with prizes in class for the fastest or most accurate recordings.
The sentences towards the end of the PowerPoint are more challenging than those at the beginning.
A selection of the tongue-twisters:
- Seize chaises sèchent.
English translation: Sixteen chairs are drying. - La robe rouge de Rosalie est ravissante.
English translation: Rosalie’s red dress is ravishing. - La pipe du papa du pape Pie pue.
English translation: Pope Pius’s dad’s pipe stinks. - La mule a bu tant qu’elle a pu.
English translation: The mule drank as much as it could.
