Place value: EAL activities

This set of maths activities by The Bell Foundation supports learners using EAL in the development of vocabulary related to place values.

Through the use of both barrier game and card game activities, learners are engaged in meaningful communication, learning to use the language of asking and answering questions and that of instruction while at the same time gaining an ability to understand what place values represent, how to break numbers into place values and how to convert place value elements into full numbers.

This set of activities is suitable for maths students in KS2 and KS3 who are new to English, or at the early acquisition or developing confidence stage of English language proficiency.
