A differentiated KS2 resource that asks children to write diary extracts for a particular person on the day before and the day after the coronation of King Charles III.

Children are given the choice of writing as The King, the Archbishop of Canterbury, a guest at the ceremony or a member of the crowd.

The resource includes tips, a template and three different sets of success criteria to cater for different abilities.

Diary-writing tips from the resource:

Usually, people write the date (and sometimes the time of day) at the beginning of their diary entry. This is so that they can remember when it happened if they read it back later.

Diaries are personal pieces of writing so they are written in the first person. This means that the writer uses the words ‘I’, ‘me’ and ‘my’ to talk about their own experiences and feelings.

Diary extracts are often written in the past tense because they are recounting things that have already happened and what the author thought about those events.

Since diary entries are often about a person’s past experiences, they are often written in chronological order. This means that the author writes down what happened in the order that it happened at the time. This means that there are often lots of adverbials of time in the text.
